Constantin Brancusi was a Romanian sculptor based in France, known as the father of modernist sculpture. On a trip to Paris we visited the Atelier, home to a vast collection of his work, just outside the Centre Pompidou. We both knew his work already, but we succumbed to the beauty of it, the nobility of the materials, the simplicity and the power of each piece.
An all day cafe and bistro at 104 Micklegate. Brunch on sourdough, good coffee, seasonal plates and natural wine, served in small arty rooms three doors down from our first place, Partisan.
Seven years after opening Partisan, the chance came to take on another beautiful historical building three doors down at 104 Micklegate. We wanted a vibrant, relaxed and casual restaurant with a sustainable, high quality, produce-led menu, supporting small scale producers along the way. Art has always been part of what we do, so we called it Brancusi.
Coffee all day, from a flat white to a matcha, plus proper hot chocolate. There is a shelf of natural wine behind the counter, poured by the glass with brunch or lunch, and cocktails when the mood takes you.

It is a small place with a small front, but there is more inside than you might expect. Paintings on the walls, sculptures on the sills, a counter of cakes, and tables for brunch, lunch and, later in the week, the evening too.

People keep calling it a hidden gem: a small front that opens into cosy rooms full of artwork, with more space upstairs than you would ever guess from the street.
The food comes up again and again: generous brunch plates, crisp sour sourdough, rich eggs and beautifully presented dishes that people say are worth the bill.
Visitors mention the warm atmosphere and genuinely attentive service, whether they booked ahead or wandered in off Micklegate on a whim.
